WL Piling recently supported specialist foundation works on a major residential renovation project in Worsley, Greater Manchester, later featured on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds.
The project, carried out for QBIC Design and Construction, involved a large home renovation where the rear of the property was being opened up using substantial steelwork and goal post frames. During the works, it became clear that the existing footings were not suitable to take the new point loads from the proposed structural steelwork.
QBIC Design and Construction contacted WL Piling to assess the issue and provide a suitable foundation solution. Our team attended site, worked with a structural engineer, and helped develop a design involving piles, reinforcement cages and pile caps to support the new steelwork.
The wider home transformation was later covered by the Manchester Evening News, which highlighted the Worsley property’s appearance on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds. Supporting a Major Residential Renovation in Worsley
Large home renovation projects can change how a property carries and transfers structural loads. When walls are removed, spaces are opened up or large steel frames are introduced, the existing foundations may need to be reviewed carefully before the next stage of construction can continue.
On this Worsley project, the aim was to open up the rear of the house and create a more spacious layout. To achieve this, large steels and goal post frames were required. Once the existing footings were assessed, it became clear they were not suitable enough to carry the new point loads.
This is where specialist residential piling can become essential. Piled foundations can help transfer structural loads into deeper, more stable ground where standard shallow footings are not suitable for the planned works.
Why the Existing Footings Were Not Enough
Existing footings are usually designed around the original structure. When a renovation introduces larger openings, new steel beams or goal post arrangements, the load path can change significantly. Instead of loads being spread in the same way as before, concentrated point loads may need to be carried by the foundations below.
If the existing footings are not suitable for those new loads, simply continuing with the build could create long-term structural risks. A proper foundation solution is needed to support the new steelwork safely.
WL Piling attended the site and worked with a structural engineer to provide a suitable piling design. The solution involved installing piles and reinforcement cages for pile caps, helping create the required support for the new internal steelwork.
Internal Piling Works for New Steels and Goal Posts
Internal piling works on an existing residential property require careful planning. Access, working space, nearby structures, floor levels and the wider construction programme all need to be considered before installation can begin.
WL Piling carried out the internal works required for the new steels, installing piles and preparing the reinforcement needed for the pile caps. This helped provide a reliable foundation detail for the new goal post arrangement.
Projects like this show why it is important to involve an experienced piling contractor when structural alterations place new demands on an existing home. The work below ground is rarely the most visible part of a renovation, but it is often one of the most important.
Additional Piles for the Lower Level and Decking Area
After the initial internal piling works were complete, WL Piling was asked to return to site to install additional piles at the lower level of the property.
These additional works were required to support further new steels and the planned decking area. This helped provide the lower-level works with a suitable foundation base and supported the next stage of the wider transformation.
On split-level or sloping residential sites, piling can be particularly useful because different areas of the project may have different load requirements, access restrictions or ground conditions.
Working Alongside Other North West Construction Specialists
A renovation of this scale relies on several specialist teams working together at the right stage of the build. Alongside WL Piling’s foundation and piling works, concrete was supplied for the project by Chorley Concrete, a North West concrete supplier providing concrete, screed and aggregate services across areas including Wigan, Chorley, Preston and Warrington.
For structural works involving piles, cages and pile caps, coordination between the piling team, structural engineer, contractor and concrete supplier is important. Once the piling design and installation stages are complete, the correct concrete supply helps bring the foundation detail together ready for the next phase of construction.
This joined-up approach helped support the wider Worsley home renovation, which was later featured on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds and covered by the Manchester Evening News.
Why Piling Is Often Needed on Major Home Renovations
Piling is often associated with new build projects, but it can also play a vital role in residential renovations, extensions and structural alterations. When a project changes how the building is supported, the foundations need to be suitable for the new design.
Piling may be recommended where:
- Existing footings are not suitable for new structural loads
- Large steels or goal post frames are being installed
- Ground conditions require deeper support
- The property layout is being significantly changed
- Works are being carried out close to existing structures
- A lower level, extension or external structure needs additional support
- Traditional foundations are not practical or suitable
For homeowners, builders and construction companies, involving a piling specialist early can help avoid delays if foundation issues are uncovered during the build.
If access is limited or the work is being carried out inside or close to an existing property, mini piling may also be suitable. Mini piling is commonly used on residential projects where space, access or ground conditions make traditional piling methods more difficult.
A Worsley Project Later Featured on Channel 4
The wider Worsley home transformation was later featured on Channel 4’s George Clarke’s Beautiful Builds and covered by the Manchester Evening News.
For WL Piling, the project is a strong example of how specialist foundation work supports ambitious residential renovations. While the finished transformation is seen above ground, the success of a project like this often depends on careful planning, structural design and foundation work below it.
Residential Piling Across Greater Manchester and the North West
WL Piling works with homeowners, builders, developers and construction companies across Greater Manchester, the North West and surrounding areas.
