WL Piling recently completed the foundation work for a new single-storey extension. Over two working days, our team carried out the required structural calculations, installed eight piles to a depth of four metres and completed the associated steel reinforcement and concreting.

The project also demonstrated the importance of careful site assessment. During the installation, our team identified a previously undetected drain beneath the proposed extension. Discovering it at this stage allowed the issue to be addressed before construction progressed, helping the builder avoid potentially disruptive and expensive problems later in the project.

Project Summary

  • Project: Foundation piling for a single-storey extension
  • Programme: Completed within two working days
  • Piles installed: Eight
  • Pile depth: Four metres
  • Additional work: Structural calculations, steel reinforcement and concreting
  • Site challenge: A previously undetected drain beneath the proposed extension
  • Outcome: Piling completed efficiently, with the drainage issue identified before further construction

Foundation Piling for a Single-Storey Extension

Extensions can place significant additional loads on the ground, particularly where the near-surface soil is weak, variable or unsuitable for conventional foundations. Piling transfers these loads to stronger ground at greater depth, creating a dependable base for the new structure.

For this project, eight piles were installed, with each pile reaching a depth of four metres. This provided the foundation support required for the proposed extension while keeping the work focused within the building footprint.

WL Piling provides specialist residential piling services for extensions, new-build homes and other domestic developments where reliable foundation support is required.

Structural Calculations and Project Planning

Before installation began, the required structural calculations were completed to establish an appropriate foundation solution for the extension. This stage helps determine how the loads from the proposed structure will be transferred safely into the supporting ground.

Combining the calculations with a review of the proposed development allowed the piling work, reinforcement and concreting to be planned as one coordinated package. This reduced delays between stages and helped the team complete the work within two days.

Our wider piling services can include project review, structural calculations, installation and the supporting work required to prepare the foundations for the next stage of construction.

Identifying a Previously Undetected Drain

During the work, the team discovered a drain that had not previously been identified on the site. Its position beneath the proposed extension made this an important finding.

If the drain had remained undetected, it could have interfered with the foundation work or created complications after construction had progressed. Identifying it during the piling stage gave the builder an opportunity to consider it before continuing with the extension.

The team’s care and attention received positive feedback from both the builder and the building inspector. It is a good example of why foundation work requires more than simply installing piles: awareness of the surrounding site conditions is an essential part of delivering a successful result.

Steel Reinforcement and Concreting

Once the piles had been installed, the required steel reinforcement was positioned and the concreting work completed. Carrying out these elements as part of the same package helped maintain consistency across the foundation and kept the project moving efficiently.

Despite the unexpected drainage discovery, the structural calculations, installation of all eight piles, reinforcement and concreting were completed within the planned two-day programme.

A Complete Foundation Solution

The finished work provided the extension with a secure foundation while also giving the builder greater confidence about the conditions beneath the site. Catching the drain before the build progressed helped reduce the risk of future disruption and demonstrated the value of an experienced piling contractor.

Whether a project involves a domestic extension, a new-build property or a more complex development, WL Piling can provide a tailored foundation piling solution based on the proposed structure and ground conditions.
